Asbestos Removal Delayed on 1920s Craftsman That Burned in Banning

Asbestos removal scheduled to begin Jan. 31 at a 1920s Craftsman home that burned in October was delayed, the son of the owner said just before 5 p.m. Tuesday outside the gutted structure on West Ramsey Street.

"They'll probably be here tomorrow," Paul Thompson of Redlands said.

City Manager Andy Takata told the Banning city council last week that asbestos removal was expected to be finished by Feb. 2, and demolition of the gutted structure is hoped to be completed by the end of February.

The home was built in 1925, Paul's mother, Ann Thompson said in October. She said she bought the place about nine years ago but did not live there because she had difficulty meeting city code regulations.

"It was a Craftsman," Thompson said, referring to the American architectural style that began around the end of the 19th century and remained popular into the 1930s.

"Since I've been retired I only get Social Security, which is very limited," Thompson said. "So I put a big mortgage on my home to get this. And I borrowed money from my sister and my brother. And now it's all gone, and everything in it is all gone. . . . It wasn't insured.

"So I feel the city has lost something. A beautiful, historic place."

On Sunday this week, a glimpse of the home's and Banning's past emerged when a family member of the man who had it built contacted Banning-Beaumont Patch.

The home was built in the 1920s by a man named Joseph Benjamin Smith, who emigrated to the U.S. decades earlier as a boy from Poland, his great-granddaughter Marilyn Burgner of Anaheim said in phone interviews.

Burgner, 62, said she learned the home was destroyed by fire on Sunday when her husband received a phone call from the current owner, Ann Thompson.

The news stirred memories for Burgner because she has family photos of the place, and her great-grandfather, her two grandfathers, and her father are buried at Sunnyslope Cemetery in Banning, she said.

Homeowners Can Enjoy Maximum Protection Through Anaheim ...

Everybody wants to have maximum security at home. This is a great way to keep away potential intruders. But special attention should be given to your particular need. For example, if you choose alarm systems, consider your little children who may trip and trigger the alarm during their playtime. If you have pets in the yard, they may also cause a loud siren blast off from time to time. In addition, teenage family members may also contribute to trigger the alarms as they leave or enter the house. This simply shows that alarms may not be suited for all. A Tucson Security System may work best for you in this aspect. It allows you to have stress-free system maintenance since all of the monitoring will be done by trained personnel. You will be provided with a remote that is key-chained to your body so that you can carry it around with you.

A wireless system has an advantage over wired systems. In a wired set-up, one corner is allocated for the control panel. In case there is an intrusion and you are far from the switch or button, you may not successfully obtain help from the outside. But with wireless monitoring services from Anaheim home security , you can be flexible in your movements, but of course, you have to do your part by always bringing the system remote with you at all times. Whatever manner of security you choose to implement at home is better than having zero protection. In terms of monetary claims against losses and damages by a third party, your insurance company can help you recover. Home security systems also allow you to enjoy savings and discounts in your homeowner’s insurance premium. This is another unexpected benefit that comes when you sign up for home security services from a reputable company.
