Gather Information and Seek Medical Care When Dogs Bite in California
February 15, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When dogs attack and bite people, it is typically shocking to both victims and pet owners. Taking action immediately following an encounter, for example gathering information about the dog and its owner and seeking medical care, can help to prevent further harm and injury to victims. In addition, in strict liability states like California, victims should file legal claims against dog owners and their homeowner's insurance providers to cover their dog bite-related medical expenses and pain and suffering under the state's dog bite statutes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states about 4.5 million dog bites occur annually. In addition, emergency rooms around the U.S. log around 885,000, or 1 in 5, cases where victims of dog bites seek medical attention each year. Many victims are children and adult males. According to State Farm insurance statistics, California had the highest number of dog bites in the nation in 2010 with 369 claims filed. On average, State Farm paid $30,000 per settlement, which cost the company over $11 million in payouts. Immediately following a dog bite, dog owners or witnesses should secure the aggressive dog and get victims to a safe location. Victims or witnesses should gather information about the dog and its owner before anyone leaves the scene, including rabies vaccination status and owner contact numbers, and call any law enforcement or emergency medical personnel. If the dog is a stray, it should be held until an animal control agency arrives. Victims should stop any bleeding, try to keep their bite wounds clean and elevated and seek medical care. To be on the safe side and limit any further consequences or infection from dog bite injuries, victims should seek medical treatment. While the bite may leave obvious skin abrasions and puncture injuries, there may be more serious harm under the surface, which could include muscle, tendon, nerve or bone damage.

Adopt A Pit Bull, It Will Make You So Much ... - Einhorn Insurance
Adopt A Pit Bull, It Will Make You So Much Happier!
Adopting A Pit Bull can be the best thing you’ve ever done! There are so many loving Pit Bulls in Rescues and Shelters that would love to be part of your family.
When you adopt a Pit Bull, from a credible rescue or shelter, your new family member will have a completed health evaluation, all their shots and be fixed (neutered or spayed).
Below are some Pit Bull facts that make this breed so wonderful and unique.
Pit Bulls can make sweet and loyal family dogs. They are the best snuggle buddies and love to play. If you have smaller children in your home, remember Pit Bulls are very strong and may accidentally knock a small child over. Small children should never be allowed to walk a dog unsupervised or be around dogs while feeding. This is the case with any breed of dog.
This is a hardy breed which usually ranges from moderately active to extremely energetic. We play fetch with our Pit Bull Bernice 2-3 times a day for about 10 minutes each session. When she was younger (she’s now 8), these play sessions were about 20-30 minutes long. It is very important for a Pit Bull to get exercise. Without exercise they may become frustrated and this can lead to chewing and other destructive behavior. Maybe you don’t want a high energy dog? Then we urge you to consider adopting an older Pit Bull or senior Pit Bull. They have all the wonderful personality traits of their younger friends, but are less energetic.
Dog-to-dog aggression can be an issue with Pit Bulls. Socializing any breed of dog is very important at an early age. The great thing about adopting a Pit Bull is the rescue or shelter you adopt from can tell you how the dog behaves with other dogs. We strongly encourage Pit Bull owners to avoid dog parks. Our concern isn’t with your Pit Bull, but it’s the other dogs, irresponsible owners and diseases that we’re worried about.
