Mass. AG Coakley: Proposed Homeowners Rate Increase 'Illegally Excessive'

The association, composed of homeowners insurance carriers in the state, is seeking approval to raise rates for the Massachusetts Fair Access to Insurance Requirements, or FAIR Plan. The FAIR Plan provides basic property insurance to eligible property for applicants who have been unable to gain insurance through the voluntary market. Under state law, rates for that plan can be rejected by the and other coastal areas. Coakley's statement said insurance companies have been shedding business in those areas.

"The FAIR Plan is a crucial service for homeowners who are unable to find insurance coverage, and it is our job to make sure its rates are not excessive," Coakley said. "We will continue to fight on behalf of homeowners to protect their right to affordable coverage."
