The one-story, frame house at 1750 Kizer Ridge Road was ruled a total loss, said Houston County Fire Chief David Hardin. “They lost basically everything,” he added.

The fire call was received just after 7:30 a.m. and seven firefighters with a pumper and a tanker truck responded to find the structure fully involved in flames. Stewart County Fire and Rescue provided aid with three firefighters and a tanker truck.

Brown said the boy saw the smoke and tried to wake his mother, who is a heavy sleeper. He then went to wake a cousin in another room but returned to his mother when he was unsuccessful.

“He kept trying until he woke her up,” she said. “The mother set him and his twin sister out the door and went back inside for the cousin. Everybody got out safely.”

The Clarksville-Montgomery County Red Cross chapter, which also serves Stewart and Houston counties, is coordinating donations for Delphia Barber, the boy’s great grandmother, and her family. Cash donations can be made to the Red Cross, and those wanting to donate items can call the office at (931) 645-6401 and they will contact the family.

Barber was buying the house and had no insurance, Brown said. The homeowner, Frank Young, had insurance that covered the structure but not the contents.

“They lost all they had, even the kid’s Christmas gifts,” Brown said.

She didn’t know all the family’s clothing sizes but said the boy is size3 and his twin sister is size 4, and they have a 9-year-old sister who was at school at the time of the fire.

Brown added that the mother had recently been laid off from her job.
