The fire call was received just after 7:30 a.m. and seven firefighters with a pumper and a tanker truck responded to find the structure fully involved in flames. Stewart County Fire and Rescue provided aid with three firefighters and a tanker truck.
Brown said the boy saw the smoke and tried to wake his mother, who is a heavy sleeper. He then went to wake a cousin in another room but returned to his mother when he was unsuccessful.
He kept trying until he woke her up, she said. The mother set him and his twin sister out the door and went back inside for the cousin. Everybody got out safely.
The Clarksville-Montgomery County Red Cross chapter, which also serves Stewart and Houston counties, is coordinating donations for Delphia Barber, the boys great grandmother, and her family. Brown added that the mother had recently been laid off from her job.
