The Good Word: Dearborn Heights needs to approve millage increase

This column is about Dearborn Heights urgent need for approval of a 2.95-mill increase on Nov. 8. I interviewed Mayor Dan Paletko about the new millage proposal. He said when it is passed it will result in generating approximately $3.5 million annually in additional property tax revenue. This will keep city services — fire, police, DPW, garbage disposal, etc. — operating at the level Dearborn Heights residents have repeatedly said they require. Dearborn Heights has run out of options, as have all other Michigan municipalities and counties and the state itself, for one time on-paper budget fixes. There is no rainy day fund transfer or federal stimulus grant dollars available to close budget gaps. Paletko and the City Council have reluctantly come to the conclusion that Dearborn Heights needs to raise its operating millage from the present 6.324 mills to 8.5 mills — from 8.551 mills to 11.5 mills for total city mills including public safety and solid waste. As Dearborn Heights homeowners know their property taxes have gone down substantially for the last several years. This is the inevitable result of the corresponding decrease in the value of Dearborn Heights residential property. However, there unfortunately is no decrease in the costs of maintaining the government services  Dearborn Heights residents cherish and have made clear they want to keep.

Yes, times are tough throughout Michigan, including in Dearborn Heights. As a result house prices have fallen big time. However, the only way this unfortunate situation will reverse itself in the years ahead is if potential home buyers feel that Dearborn Heights is a safe, clean, pleasant place to live and that its schools well educate its students. To make sure this happens, it is imperative that action is taken now by Dearborn Heights voters in passing the millage increase to preserve, and even enhance, essential city services. This column is about Dearborn Heights urgent need for approval of a 2.
