Homeowners recovering from the Missouri River flood are starting to receive financial help but there may be a lot of red tape even after you get a check in the mail.
Debbie Schroeder who lives in Riv-R-Land Estates recently received a flood insurance advance check for $6,000. But she soon found out investing that money in her home after it got destroyed by the Missouri River wouldn't be as easy as cashing the check.
"They made it out to my husband, myself our mortgage company and our second mortgage company so we can't do anything with it, at all," said Schroeder.
Schroeder's mortgage companies would have to sign off on the check for her to get the money. But they could also choose not to as they hold a financial interest on the property. A sign that just because you have a check doesn't mean instant money in your pocket.
Schroeder says, "We thought we had a beginning and now it's just we have to constantly continue paying."
And since she has no idea when she'll get a check from FEMA all the obstacles start piling up.
"Everything's red tape with this situation. You can't get a straight answer from FEMA to save your soul! I was three and a half hours down at the North Sioux City center. Three and a half hours and I left there with no answers," said Schroeder.
Schroeder's bank in Sioux City said they would sign off the check but she still has to hear from her mortgage company in Ohio to find out if that money will indeed go to her flood recovery.

If you own a high value home, then it’s vitally important to obtain the right insurance cover to protect it. As fire and water damage are a couple of the most essential threats, be sure that your high value home insurance cover is appropriate. Many insurers now ask policyholders to be proactive, that is, to take measures on their own to reduce their exposure to risk. The majority of the steps are rooted in basic knowledge, and aren’t costly or hard to apply. These facts are compiled to help you realize how you can safeguard your home from fire and water damage.
High Value Home Insurance: Measures to Protect You From Water Damage
In the winter season, you always stand the possibility of getting your home flooded by frozen water pipes. High value home insurance providers know that up to 300 gallons of water can flow from a burst pipe in just one hour. Be sure that everyone in the household knows where the main shut-off for the water supply is. It’s a good idea to inspect the main stopcock for the water supply, and make certain that it’s operable. In the event that it’s stuck, don’t try beating it open with a hammer. Rather than trying that, speak to a plumber. Scores of people lean towards reducing their heat whenever they will not be at home – bad move, reducing your heat may leave you with frozen pipes. It would be great if you have a neighbour or friend to keep watch on it. If a pipe bursts, the action recommended by home insurance providers is to turn off the mains stopcock, turn off the central heating, and turn on all the taps. The number one answer to defrosting a frozen pipe is using soft heat from a hot water bottle or cloths drenched in hot water.
High Value Home Insurance: Methods of Averting Fire Damage
One of the most important actions you can take to protect your home from fire damage is to fit it with smoke detectors. Depending on the size of your residence, and perhaps on the advice of your home insurance provider, you’ll need to have a minimum of 2 smoke detectors: one on the ground floor, and one on that’s close to the head of the stairs to the second storey. Perform a test on the detectors at 3 month intervals to make sure that they are functioning properly.Because electricity causes a lot of fires starting, make sure you review your decision to avoid having too many items plugged into a single. Yet another point to deliberate on the setting is a residual circuit breaker to avoid additional surcharges. To stop the cooking fires and password, you should not let the hot grease or oil on the fire alone, and by all means, never use water to extinguish a grease fire. Avoid at all, simply use a fire blanket or damp cloth. If you are unsure if a gas appliance is working properly, have someone review it before using it.
