Wellness programs foster health

More workers at Abilene companies may be able to take advantage of health screenings and preventive care offered by their employer than in year's past.

"I would say most companies in Abilene offer some form or fashion of preventive medicine. It's a lot easier to deal with preventive medicine or activity rather than deal with a full-blown illness of some kind," said Malcolm Coco, a professor of human resource management at Abilene Christian University.

Recent health care reform enacted by federal legislators includes a mandate making preventive care — including blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol tests, as well as many cancer screenings and flu and pneumonia shots — available without a co-pay or deductible in many insurance plans.

The health care reform, known as the Affordable Care Act, doesn't have a fan in Austin Keith, an owner of Odessa-based Pinkie's liquor stores, however.

Keith said he's been offering free health screenings to full-time employees since 2009, before the mandate took effect. He said he's worried about reform provisions that may require him to offer health insurance to part-time workers.

"A retailer, to me, is caught in between. He can't necessarily raise his prices up. It'll be too high," said Keith. His company is self-insured, he said.

Self-funded insurance plans involve companies taking on the cost of providing health care to their workers (with insurance companies handling claims); fully insured plans require a company to pay a premium based on the number of workers enrolled in the plan, with rates set for a year.

But Keith said it makes sense to offer preventive care to workers.

"We try to do all we can in this environment to retain employees, and we figure this is a good benefit for them," Keith said, describing how employees have access to on-site preventive care like blood screenings. Workers also can use an online wellness program to help them monitor their health, Keith said.
