Historical marker placed on the Court Square in honor of Governor ArnallBy Winston Skinner

A new historical marker recalling the achievements of Ellis Gibbs Arnall was dedicated in ceremonies that included about 100 families, friends and admirers.
Arnall, who died in 1992, was born in Newnan and served as governor of Georgia from 1943 to 1947.Generally, the Georgia Historical Society marker recognizing only approve those who have been dead 25 years. An exception is made in order to place markers on the Governors in their hometowns.
GHS placed a marker - facing east and west - on the establishment of the Court last year - honoring other Newnan Governor William Yates Atkinson, who served from 1894 to 1898. Marker Arnall, which faces north-south, is within walking distance.
Atkinson marker "was placed last year when this beautifully renovated 1904 courthouse was officially dedicated and reopened," said Elizabeth Beers, who coordinated the project marker of the Governor of the Newnan-Coweta Society history. Beers led the afternoon ceremonies Sunday on the north side of the courthouse.
"I think Gainesville is the only other city to have had two" governors, said Beers.
Arnall marker was unveiled by Beers, Will Handley of Georgia Historical Society and Jammie Williams, a Democratic candidate for Georgia Senate seat 28.

Arnall "had a great sense of humor," said Beers. "He joked a while in a talk here a while ago that, while other politicians had a highway, a building, bridge or something great name for them, there was parking in Newnan called him.

Lawyer Michael Rothchild will open a campaign account this week to replace his father, Circuit Judge Ron Rothschild.
Ron Rothchild withdrew after the election in November 2012.
Michael Rothschild is initially unopposed for Group 19. Other candidates could enter or current candidates could change seats.
