An insurance inquiry in Brisbane has heard a shocking story of how a flood hero had his insurance claim denied.
Vietnamese immigrant Quang Huynh appeared at the inquiry into the operation of the insurance industry on Tuesday.
He says he was called by an insurer with the help of an interpreter and was sold comprehensive home insurance.
Mr Huynh says he agreed to sign up and clearly remembers the end of the conversation; he says he asked her if the policy covered everything and she said absolutely.
During the floods, Mr Huynh saved up to 30 horses with a dinghy and was honoured for his bravery by the RSPCA.
But he has now been left high and dry.
He is one of 8,000 Queenslanders who thought they were insured but had their claims denied.
The floods inquiry also heard from Judith Dobrowa, who said last February she experienced the worst night of her life.
She told the inquiry January's floods caused about $200,000 in damage to her home at Westlake in Brisbane's west.
The following month she found out her insurance claim with CGU was rejected on the basis the damage was caused by riverine flooding.
She said the insurer made its decision based on a hydrology report, without sending an assessor to inspect her property.
"To me it was all done with smoke and mirrors," she said.
Under cross examination from CGU's lawyer Glenn Newton SC, Ms Dobrowa accepted that claims are made on the recommendations of expert opinions.
Earlier on Tuesday, Premier Anna Bligh threw down the gauntlet to insurance companies, demanding they decide claims in 30 days or pay up in a submission to the inquiry.
Ms Bligh said too many flood and cyclone victims have had to wait months to find out if their insurance claims will be met.
"I don't understand why between an assessment being done and a decision being made people can't get that done in about a 30 business day turnaround," she said.
She said if a claim is not assessed in that time, it should be deemed to have been approved.
