What a memorable 24 hours for Peyton Mosley. After tossing a four-hitter in a 4-1 victory over No. 19 West Texas A&M on Friday, the sophomore from Coppell was even better Saturday.
Mosley threw a three-hit shutout as Abilene Christian completed a sweep of the three-game Lone Star Conference softball series with a 2-0 victory over the Lady Buffs at Poly Wells Field.
Mosley, who won her third consecutive start, was beaming afterward.
"I definitely knew I had to bring my A game today, and I did," she said. "It feels really good."
Mosley (9-5) struck out six and walked one. She has allowed just three runs on 10 hits, struck out 16 and walked six in her last three starts in lowering her team-best ERA to 1.92.
ACU coach Bobby Reeves was impressed with Mosley's performance.
"Unbelievable," he said. "She was spotting the ball exactly where she needs to, getting ahead, making them hit her pitch. They're an agressive-swinging team, and she just did an unbelievable job."
Reeves was proud of his team's effort in the series. Caitlyn Crain allowed just five hits in Game 2 of the doubleheader on Friday in a 4-2 win. So Mosley and Crain combined to allow just three runs on 12 hits in 21 innings against a team that's averaging nearly seven runs per game. And the Lady Buffs were coming off a series win against No. 5 Angelo State a week ago.
The Wildcats (23-9 overall, 9-5 LSC) made only one error in the series after making five in a 12-7 loss in the series' finale a week ago against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
"It's huge," Reeves said about the sweep, ACU's first in LSC play this season. "We're inching a little bit at a time, trying to get up to the top of the conference, taking care of our business. We've had one error in three games. We had five and six unearned runs in that last game against Kingsville. A total turnaround. It's all a mindset, and they've done a great job."
ACU got the only run it needed Saturday in the first inning. Keanna Winkfield led off with a double to left center. Then after Madison Buckley moved Winkfield over to third on a sacrifice bunt, Sara Vaughn chased her home with a double to left center.
