The Stockton Thunder gave goalie Olivier Roy a little more offensive support than normal on Saturday night (Feb. 18), and he made the most of it.
For only the 11th time in Roy’s 31 starts this season, the Thunder scored more than a pair of goals for him. He responded by backstopping a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Eagles in front of a crowd of 6,608 at Stockton Arena. The teams will meet again at the same site on Sunday.
The Thunder (25-21-5) scored the game’s first three goals, giving Roy a chance to play with a rare margin for error. Stockton had scored only one goal in each of Roy’s three most recent starts before Saturday.
“It was a little bit different, but (it was) really great,” said Roy, who improved his record to 11-15-5. “The guys had four big goals in front of me, and I’m really pleased with the win.”
The victory was Stockton’s eighth in its past 10 home games (8-1-1) and marked only the second time all season that the Thunder has been able to beat the Eagles. The Thunder was 1-4-0 against Colorado entering play Saturday.
”We had problems with this team before,” Roy said of the Eagles. “Tonight, we played better. We didn’t give them as many odd-man rushes.”
Thunder Coach Matt Thomas agreed.
“I thought we played well,” he said. “I thought we did a good job trying to limit their ability to transition. I think that was an important part of the game. All in all, the guys worked hard and we played the type of game we needed to play.”
Max Campbell, Chris Doyle, Mike Little and Jordan Fulton all had goals for Stockton, which closed to within six points of the fourth-place Eagles (28-18-5) in the ECHL’s Western Conference standings. Little had an assist to go along with his goal, and Matt Foy and Kevin Baker each received credit for two assists for the Thunder.
Kevin Ulanski and Chad Costello had power-play goals for Colorado to account for the only marks against Roy, who posted 35 saves in earning the victory. Colorado goalie Robby Nolan made 31 saves in defeat.
