Young motorists are being hit with ‘horrendously unfair’ insurance premiums in Greater Manchester, according to a Lib Dem transport spokesman.
Research by the M.E.N. found insurers failing to provide a quote for some addresses, while others were prohibitively expensive at more than £4,000.
I gave my details, a 24-year-old female driver seeking cover for a Nissan Micra, to five leading insurers – Tesco, More Than, Santander, Churchill and Direct Line – to receive quotes for different postcodes around the region.
Tesco gave the highest quote, asking £4,512.40 to insure my car near my Chorlton home. Yet it asked for just £730.47 for the same vehicle in Oaklands Dene in Hyde – the street with the highest incidence of car crime in Greater Manchester, according to police statistics released in August.
Tesco also asked just £862.28 for Great Moor Street in Bolton – the worst street for all types of crime in Greater Manchester.
Other shock results included a quote for Castlefield apartments in Little Peter Street of £3,451.07, from bank Santander – which also asked for £1,503.32 for Oaklands Dene.
One end of Clarendon Road, in M16, was more than £700 dearer than the other end, which has an M21 postcode, according to quotes given by Direct Line.
Addresses in the Northern Quarter, Green Quarter, Whalley Range and Hulme were refused online cover by Santander and Tesco.
More Than failed to produce quotes for ANY of the addresses in Greater Manchester – despite offering quotes of around £1,000 for postcodes in Sheffield.
It initially blamed a validation check failure – as I didn’t live at all the addresses provided – but could not explain why quotes were offered for Sheffield if this was the case.
A spokesman said: “We have strict guidelines in place to ensure our customers get a fair deal that accurately reflects their risk. We didn’t quote because we felt that we couldn’t meet your needs on this occasion.
