The past month has been stressful for breast cancer survivor Linda Knox, but you wouldn’t guess that by talking to her.
“All I can say for myself is that I’m happy,” she said. “I just have joy in me.”
For some time, Knox, 57, a retiree and Amarillo native, could not figure out why she always felt tired, she said. She said her doctor told her to take vitamins and eat more fruit, but she still felt badly.
Eventually Knox would learn why she felt so down. She went to an Access to Breast Care for West Texas (ABC4WT) seminar Aug. 20, which volunteers from Texas Oncology — Amarillo Cancer Center held at her apartment complex, The Mariposa Apartments, she said.
At the seminar, volunteers told her she could qualify for a free mammogram, she said. Knox, who said she is legally blind and depends on her family for financial support, said she had not had a mammogram in five years because she is uninsured.
The apartment seminars are one effort a volunteer group called the WISE Woman program makes to educate women about breast cancer, Jennifer Campos, a nurse at Texas Breast Specialists, said.
Knox signed up for the free mammogram from ABC4WT. The program, which the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health launched a little more than a year ago, provides free breast health screenings for women without insurance and who may not otherwise be able to afford to pay for medical expenses, Campos said.
The Lubbock and Amarillo Texas Tech Health Science Centers carry out the program.
About a week later, Texas Oncology employees gave Linda a ride to the cancer center for the mammogram.
After her mammogram, Knox said specialists told her that if everything was OK, she would receive a letter in the mail notifying her of her results. If something was wrong, she was supposed to receive a phone call and return to the cancer center for further tests.
“Well, I got the phone call,” she said. “So I went in.

2. Texas home owner insurance quote: When insuring your house, be sure you work with just the value of the building and its content without adding the land’s value. Home insurance is to safeguard what could be damaged, lost or stolen.
No matter what happens, the land on which the home is built will still be there for you. Always deduct the price of your land from the cost of a home when you apply for a home owners insurance policy. This is so since doing otherwise means you’re buying much more than is needed. As you definitely understand, buying more means paying more whether it’s beneficial to you or not.
3. Folks who have installed some security systems get discounts. Dead-bolt locks and burglar alarms could attract discounts of close to 5 percent. With some insurance companies discounts as high as 20 percent are possible with the installation of some more advanced security devices. Nevertheless, the security devices have to be approved by the insurance company for them to have such discounts. The big discount you get might not be worth it since such advanced systems cost much.
4. Texas home owner insurance quote: A home of smokers will pay expensive premiums. Encourage everyone who lives in your home to quit smoking. Statistics have it that about 23,000 residential fires are caused by smoking. Do bear in mind that some insurance companies do not have any discounts for this.
5. You qualify for markdowns of up to ten percent with some insurers once you’re retired. The reasons for such discount are very clear: Retired individuals spend more time to maintain their homes are also more likely to spot fires since they are usually at home most times.
