A company named HomeServe USA Corp., "Home Service of Texas," is mailing letters to homeowners in Wichita Falls trying to get them to sign up for water service line insurance coverage.
The Connecticut-based company is not a government agency despite the appearance of the letter, according to an advisory sent out by the Better Business Bureau.
In a release sent out by the Wichita Falls Public Information Officer said the letter has caused some homeowners to contact the city asking why they are required to carry water line insurance.
The insurance is not a city program and not required for Wichita Falls property owners.
The BBB recently learned the company is not Florida-based as originally thought but has its headquarters located in Connecticut. The company has used a lot of different addresses, according to the BBB.
President of the local BBB Monica Horton said because the complaints filed are all directed to Connecticut, she doesn't know if any originate from Wichita Falls. She said her office has received several phone calls about the letter.
HomeServe is not BBB accredited and holds a "C" rating. The BBB received 111 complaints in last 3 years, and 55 locations closed in last 12 months, according to the BBB report.
Government action was taken on HomeServe in Kentucky and Ohio in 2010.
"They're supposed to refrain from using unfair or misleading advertisement," Horton said.
The Austin address on the letter is strictly for payments and applications. A phone number in the letter links to a report out of Florida where the company is based.
The letter states:
"Our records indicate your home at ... is not covered by Water Service Line Coverage from Home Service.
"Without this coverage, you are responsible for the full cost of maintaining and repairing the water service line that brings freshwater to your property at ... Protect yourself with Water Service Line Coverage. Coverage is optional and not required by your local utility or community. Repairs to this line are not typically covered by basic homeowners insurance and could cost you up to $2,300.
