Cobleskill - The first 15 fully furnished two-bedroom mobile homes built to FEMA specifications' s arrived at a staging area here after being towed by trucks in Alabama.
Another 10 units of 40 feet, known as park models are on the road.
They will provide temporary housing for flood victims of Tropical Storm Irene while owners repair or rebuild their damaged houses. Families who have not been able to find an apartment or rental housing near where they live and work will be eligible for a mobile home.
"Temporary housing units are for people who need a place to stay, with public services, while they repair their damaged houses," said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Philip Parr.
The units will be moved to a site of private home or a commercial site and set up by FEMA at no charge. There is no cost for mobile homes, which can be used up to 18 months with periodic reviews by FEMA personnel. Owners are responsible for paying utilities.
"We consider each request on a case by case basis," said Nate Custer, a spokesman for FEMA."Once they are approved, we can move quickly to build on the site they have identified."
The mobile homes are to be set up in an area with connections for electricity, water and sewer already exist.
Each house of 400 square foot mobile can accommodate four to six people and includes two bedrooms, one with a full-size bed and the other with two single beds. There is also a sofa bed in the living room. The kitchen includes a refrigerator, microwave, range and oven. The bathroom has a shower but no tub. The unit is equipped with central air conditioning and an electric oven.There are opportunities for a washer and dryer, but these devices are not included.
FEMA has equipped the unit with basic furniture including a table and four chairs in the dining room and plates, utensils, pans, cooking utensils and a few coffee. They provide sheets, pillows, towels and blankets, as well as a mop, broom and cleaning supplies.
