Year after year Tennessee ranks in the top for bankruptcy filings, but with new high school graduation requirements, politicians hope to change the statistic.
In both 2007 and 2008, Tennessee ranked number one out of all the states based on per capita filings. In 2009 they slipped to number two and remain in the second spot so far for 2011.Nevada is the only state to have more filings.
“If kids don't understand how to manage their money when they get out on their own they're going to be deeper in debt and they won't be able to buy a home,” said David crocket High School teacher Amy Collete who is a big advocate of requiring a personal finance class. “The kids really don't have a handle on money coming in and money going out to pay bills.”
Even though the class of 2013 is the first required to take the class in order to graduate, Washington County schools and Johnson City have offered it for the past 3 years.
“I cannot imagine a young adult that doesn't need training in personal finance,” said assistant director of Washington County schools Dr. Bill Flanary. “I almost call this life 101: it's how do you get insurance how do you get a loan how do you manage a credit card.”
“I think when you look at our economy and maybe what’s lead us to the economy we have today, it's really important to teach our students the values that go along with personal finance,” said Janie Snyder with Johnson City schools.
For certain graduates, this class is already a requirement in Johnson City.
“It fits in well with personal finance with banking and marketing and with general business that some of our students will be going through,” Snyder said.
Collette says she believes it’s really helping students understand the value of a dollar.
“They will come up and say you know I spent $20 going to the movies when I could have rented that movie and watched it at home for 5,” Collette said.
