JACKSONVILLE - Specialty pastoral Pastor Thomas Hanson is to provide spiritual leadership in the churches he serves.
"I work with congregations to understand what their strengths are, what their communities need" and helping to "planning, direction and vision," said Hanson in the Evangelical Lutheran Church St. Mark in Jacksonville.
But lately Hanson, like hundreds of other ministers in Florida, had to think about the insurance policies of their organizations. That's because State Farm Florida recently announced it is to leave the company to provide places of worship in the Sunshine State.
The company said its share of this market has been declining in recent years. It was profitable in part because rising costs of hurricanes and other storms since 2004 and because state laws do not allow the flexibility to price some of its insurance products.
State Farm Florida - which is different from the company that provides auto insurance - applied in 2009 to retire to Florida but was denied. Now it is eliminating its less profitable church and commercial policies, spokesman Chris Neal said. Congregations have until their current policies expire to find new coverage.
That will leave the company with homeowners and larger commercial customers, Neal said.
“What this is really about is reducing our exposure” to risk from storm-related payouts, and “in Florida it’s not if but when you get that big storm,” Neal said.
The company would not provide an exact number of religious institutions affected or give a regional break down. Neal said it was less than 1,000 statewide.
But many First Coast insurance agents contacted the Times-Union to say they were busy working to connect congregations with new insurance policies.
