DENTON R. Dale Palmer Sr. of Denton died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at his home. He was 80 years old.
Born in Lewes, Del., on Nov. 10, 1930, Mr. Palmer was the son of the late Walter B. Palmer Sr. and Myrtle R. Coates Palmer Harper. He moved to Denton when he was 8 years old. He was a 1947 graduate of Caroline High School in Denton and was a 1951 graduate of Washington College in Chestertown.
Mr. Palmer was a State Farm Insurance agent in Denton from 1962 until 1974. He owned and operated the Wagon Wheel Jeans store in Denton for several years before becoming a real estate agent. He worked for several real estate companies in the Mid-Shore area for many years before retiring for health reasons.
Extremely active in community affairs, Mr. Palmer served in the Maryland National Guard for 23 years. He was a former member and past president of the Denton Cemetery Associa-tion, a former member of the Denton Rotary Club, past president of the Caroline Realtors, a member and past master of Temple Lodge 128 AF&AM, a life member of the Denton Volunteer Fire Company, a former assistant Scoutmas-ter of BSA Troop 165, and a member of the St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Denton, where he held many positions in the church and had sung in the choir for 67 years. Known for his singing skills, Mr. Palmer was the past president of the Eastern Choral Arts Society, a member of the Seaford Chapter of Barber Shop International Society and a member of the SPEBSQSA.
Mr. Palmer is survived by his wife, Ruth E. Hynson-Palmer of Denton; one son, R. Dale Palmer Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Denton; two daughters, Ellen Palmer of Baxley, Ga., and Betsy Palmer Smith of West Grove, Pa.; three stepchildren: Alison Lane of Austin, Texas; Jeff Lane of Hillsboro; and Jennifer Shortall and her husband Brett of Denton; nine grandchildren: Krissy McCluskey, Leslie McCluskey-Eissing, Mark McCluskey, Brian Palmer, Victoria Smith, Rebecca Palmer, Alexandra Smith, Alyssa Shortall and Brady Shortall; and four great-grandchildren: Brad, Shawn, Lilly and Lindsay.
