More Oklahoma students are taking college prep courses

According to data compiled by the Oklahoma Department of Education, the parents and/or guardians of 4,242 Oklahoma high school freshmen have consented to their students opting out of the college preparatory curriculum in favor of the basic core curriculum. Completing either set of requirements leads to a high school diploma. With freshman enrollment for the current school year at 48,151 students, the number of students opting out of the ACE curriculum represents 8.81 percent of the class of 2015. The percentage of the class of 2014 whose parents and/or guardians allowed them to opt out of the curriculum in 2010 was 9.51 percent and in 2006 was 11.86 percent. Earlier this month, Barresi announced that about 84 percent of the state’s seniors had met ACE requirements, putting them on track to graduate.

Jet will be in the Christmas Parade

The world’s smallest jet will ride on the “Jim Bridenstine for Congress” float during the Bixby Christmas Parade on December 9 and the Tulsa Christmas Parade on December 10. Bridenstine, a Navy pilot and U.S. congressional candidate, said, “After earning an endorsement from the Combat Veterans for Congress, I thought this float would be a good way to show appreciation for our veterans. Many of our troops will be spending Christmas away from home this year. I’ve been in their shoes and this float is for them too.” Bridenstine, a Republican, is challenging John Sullivan in the Republican primary, which will take place on June 26, 2012. Bridenstine was recently selected for promotion to lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, where he currently flies counter-drug missions worldwide. Early in his active duty career, Bridenstine flew combat missions in the E-2 Hawkeye in Afghanistan and Iraq. He also flew the F-18 Hornet at the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center, the parent command to TOPGUN. He has 1900 flight hours and 333 carrier arrested landings. The Bixby Christmas Parade starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9 at Bixby Central Elementary on Main Street and 5th Ave. The Tulsa Christmas Parade starts at 6 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Tulsa Hills shopping center on 71st Street at U.S. 75.
