The fifth generation of the WilloMD is a sleek, hand-held computer that can be stored at home in the same area as other portable household electronics and do something no smart phone or GPS system could ever accomplish.
"Its mission is to relieve pain, improve mobility, and enhance performance, and it has done that 90 percent of the time," said Dr. Ronald Shapiro, a cofounder and medical director of Physician's Technology LLC, based in Monroe.
A faculty member at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, formerly the Medical College of Ohio, Dr. Shapiro also is director of medical education at St. Anne Mercy Hospital and director of St. Anne's emergency room interval pain service.
The kidney specialist who has practiced acupuncture learned that some patients in pain could not endure traditional therapy. His quest to find ways to help them set him on a path that led to the development of Physician's Technology which focuses on pain management, and WilloMD.
Dr. Shapiro said WilloMD can be used alone or with other methods to relieve pain. It is useful for someone who is not eligible for surgery to relieve joint pain, and for those who have had joint surgery and are dealing with the after-effects. WilloMD users only have to strap the device on the knee or another joint, press the power button, and select from one to four the preferred level of energy to be delivered. The technology transmits energy through the skin and the user feels mild warmth as the device turns off the pain signals and turns on the body's healing signals. In turn this stimulates the joint, produces healing, and reduces swelling.
"With 7,000 deaths a year resulting from the use of nonsteroidal drugs," finding another means to relieve joint pain is sensible, Dr. Shapiro said.
There are other WilloMD inventors and patent holders: David Sutton, chief executive officer and also a founder of Physician's Technology, and Dr. Richard Dunlap, a Toledo dentist whose interest in relieving dental pain drew him to the project.

@TANNER77719 how does paying an extra percent or two in tax bring in ten problems that arent worth the 50.000 lives it saves?
In denmark we pay just 39% in income tax, corporations (the kind you yanks LURVE) only pay 29% of PROFITS (so most yank corporations dont pay shit to the danish government, being fraudsters all of ‘em) and we’re just 7 million people… happiest people on the planet, safety net for everybody.
you have 308 million citizens.
do the math and shut up.
I work in a hospital in the south. It is the truth about people coming in and jump plain whining about their situation. Suck it all up folks. Grow up. They come to the ER, run up a huge bill because the ER can’t NOT treat them and then they refuse to pay their bill. Guess who pays for these bills? Those of us that do have insurance or who do pay for legitimate bills.
I always lol at idiots saying “you’re unamerican” just because you have a different opinion, that doesnt mean shit to me. Freedom of speech mean anything to you? Anyways remember that republican, democratic, or whatever, people dont get to positions of power without stepping on people. What makes you think they wouldnt hesitate to step on some dumb hick a thousand miles away? Do some research stop arguing on youtube and try to make a change. Start with ACTA, research it and help fight it.
I understand your views my friend. But you also have to see it this way, if Obama didn’t push the bill, the Republicans weren’t going to make any change whatsoever because they had no plans on healthcare whatsoever, their pockets were bring juiced up with so much money, they forgot about the sick americans out there who live and died for this country with nothing to fall back on.. and i’m not a Lib or anything, i’m mutual.. I just call it as I see it.. I’m sorry about putting you down.. we are both adults, and everyone isn’t going to have the same views.. the healthcare bill in my eyes is a good start into sending our great nation into the right direction.. Yes it has flaws, hopefully we could fix them to make the bill near perfect..Think about this, if your loved one was sick, and you couldn’t get them coverage because of their pre condictions do you think that’s fair?
