LAKE PETERSBURG -- Nine months after a tornado badly damaged his Lake Petersburg home, Derrick Stevens is living in a bed and breakfast as he goes back and forth with his insurance company.
The B&B is the fourth place he’s lived since the bizarre New Year’s Eve storm hit, and repairs to his house are still unfinished. As of last week, he still hadn’t settled with his insurance company on a final figure for all of the damage.
“It just drags on forever. The stress of not having a place is hard to believe,” Stevens said.
Means "everything" home
Stevens had only lived in the house about six months when the tornado damaged about 85 homes on Lake Petersburg, which is just south of St. Petersburg in Menard County. Home Stevens was one of 13 that were deemed uninhabitable.
Friends and family were quick to offer help, but as the months passed, Stevens realized he had another problem: He and Pekin Insurance had different ideas about how the house should be set.
"I do not feel they are trying to do the whole house," said Stevens.
Adding problems
One point of disagreement is the foundation. Stevens said there were cracks in the mortar around the house. He wanted to replace the foundation, but the insurance company thought it could be repaired.
The roof is another question.
Stevens said that because of these delays, the water got into the house and created a mold problem. He realized mold was a possibility, then he did what he could to prevent mold from growing.
"We have set up tarps on three occasions. They could just flap in the wind, "said Stevens.
Stevens said Pekin told him he had a $10,000 limit for mold removal.
“I got two bids. One was for $20,000, and the second was higher than that. If I had gotten this moving in March, I wouldn’t be having this problem,” he said.
Hurricane Irene which was the first hurricane of the 2011 hurricane season came roaring through causing a lot of damage to parts of the country including the New york coast line. Roof were damaged and homes were flooded as the hurricane left damage in its wake.
While powerful, the United States have certainly seen larger and more ferocious hurricanes in the past such as Hurricane katrina, the worst in recorded history. Home owners are worried about their property being covered by the insurance policies that they have on their homes, cars, boats aand more.
The is a possibility that not all homeoners are going to be covered under their existing homeowners insurance policy due to hurricane, tornadoes and the such are often cited as acts of god and there fore not claimable upon insurance policies.
If you were afffected and your home damaged by Huricane Irene, you should have already been in contact with your insurance provider to make sure that any damage sustained will be covered under your current policy.
