Progressive Corp. band "The Messengers" competes in the Battle of Corporate Bands

Dave Krew started his band on a whim.

Six years ago, he sent an e-mail to other Progressive Corp. employees to drum up interest in starting an amateur rock band for a one-time event - a 10th year anniversary celebration for the insurance giant's online division. Now, he and the four other members of The Messengers have loftier goals.

The classic rock and R&B group wants to claim the title of Best Corporate Band in America on Saturday, at the Fortune Battle of the Bands.

The Messengers face seven other national finalists selected for the 11th annual event at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. It's the first time a Cleveland band has made it to finals since 2003, when Yield to Maturity, a group from the former National City Corp., performed.

"This is the first year we've made it not just to the regionals, but to national competition," said Krew, a senior controller at Progressive who performed in Dallas in May at the regional competition, hosted by Fortune Magazine. "We're impressed with the other bands, but we feel very good about our line-up."

Acts from around the country include Metalibuxx from Starbucks, the Toys from Mattel, Life Size from GE Healthcare Life Sciences, the Slim Jim Blues Ensemble from ConAgra Foods and Kash is King from Procter & Gamble. Rewired from Resource Interactive, in Columbus, are finalist as well as Ernst & Young's group, American PI. One of the accounting firm's 12 members works in Cleveland.

Progressive's group has been trying to make it to regionals since the group formed. They started with 12 people who first made an unsophisticated home recording in someone's basement. They used to go by the name the Renewals. This year, the group changed it's name to the Messengers -- a play on the company's newest ad campaign, which features a passionate customer turned advocate by Flo, the company's spunky sales lady.

This time, the Messenger's entry CD was created in one member's home studio, one of more than 25 band entrants.
