The Preserve, Johns Island businesses back school kayak club
To further an education program at Charleston Collegiate School, a Johns Island neighborhood is giving students’ access to adjacent Penny Creek.
The Preserve at Fenwick Plantation and local businesses are partnering with the school to start a “history and science-based, after school kayak club,” the community says. The club would expand on the school’s existing Outdoor Education Program.
The Preserve granted the school access to the property and its community docks on the deep water creek. The docks would serve as a launch point for the “ultimate outdoor classroom,” according to The Preserve.
The program would help educate students on South Carolina’s history and its marsh, river and harbor ecology, “all from the front row seat of a kayak,” the community says. The Preserve at Fenwick was the site of colonial settlements and Revolutionary and Civil war battles.
