Hutcherson: I was at Brookville Elementary School for the first year, Concord Branch elementary grade and the second yellow card for the third grade through sixth grades. I attended Rustburg Middle School for students in seventh and eighth and Rustburg High School in ninth grade to 12 years. I graduated from Rustburg High School in June 1977. I attended Central Virginia Community College during the day and worked at night in Thomasville Furniture in Appomattox during the 1977-1978 school year. I was enrolled in a course of electricity. In 1978, I went into maintenance as a boiler fireman and I worked swing shift until 1980, when I left to accept a job with Meredith Burda in the pressroom. I worked swing shift at Meredith Burda from 1980 to July of 1983 when I left Meredith Burda to accept a job with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office as a patrol deputy. Adams: Let me ask you this. Would you want someone working on your vehicle without experience, making repairs to your house or cutting your hair? We are talking about a job that sometimes is a matter of life or death. There is no room for on-the-job training. I have experience in some matters that I really don't want and that is talking to families that have lost a loved one due to a homicide or traffic accident. There is more to this job than fighting crime. Understanding, compassion and an underlying desire to make things right are as important. Hutcherson: The biggest challenge facing the sheriff on Jan. 1 will be the fiscal year 2011-12 budget that will begin on July 1, 2012. The budget process will actually begin in December of this year. We have been told that the state budget outlook is bleak, and to make matters worse, federal budget cuts will be passed along to the states and the state will probably have to pass some of those cuts to localities.
