If pets had a say in where their owners lived, Waltham would probably be a popular choice.
Aside from the many parks and recreational areas in the city, Waltham is also home to one of only a few 24/7 emergency pet care centers in the Boston area.
Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center of New England (VESCONE ), located on Bear Hill Road, is always open to the public, with highly specialized veterinarians ready to treat any emergency, from the minor to the most pressing.
Kelly Parkinson, a practice manager at the center, said that a 24-hour veterinary offers “peace of mind” for pet owners in the area, especially when their animal gets sick or suffers an injury at an inopportune time.
“What do you do at 10 o’clock at night? You don’t know where to go,” she said.
Parkinson said the center encourages pet owners to come in at the first sign that their pet is acting differently.
“Nobody knows your pet like you do,” she said. “Generally animals are pretty stoic. Once they start to show symptoms of something, there could be a real issue going on.”
Some of the signs, particularly for dogs, are when they seem lethargic, or are drinking more water than usual.
VESCONE recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary of providing round-the-clock care to animals.
The center boasts one of the most comprehensive veterinary services in the area, with 17,000 square feet comprised of four surgical rooms, two radiology suites and four intensive care units, including one dedicated especially for cats. There are 40 people on the staff.
Besides the emergency and critical care department, the center also includes internal medicine and ophthalmology departments. The New England Veterinary Oncology Group is next door to the center, and provides cancer treatment.
VESCONE is strictly an emergency and specialty care provider, and does not offer primary care.
